In August 1835, Alexandre Dumas was in Rome and decided to visit the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in the company of his friend, the painter Louis Godefroy Jadin. He first goes to Naples, then visits Capri and the “Blue Grotto”, (re) discovered a few years earlier by the German painters August Kopisch (in) and Ernst Fries. From the Bay of Naples, he embarks for Sicily and reaches Messina.
