The action takes place between February and September 1578, six years after the massacre of St. Bartholomew by which begins Queen Margot. Duke François d’Alençon, became Duke of Anjou since the coronation of his brother Henry III is reconciled with him in 1577 but becomes confused again in February 1578. The gentlemen of the Duke, called the Angevins in the novel, seek noise the favorites of the king, the cute, who are also threatened by supporters of the Duke of Guise, leader of the Catholic faction, which Henry III attempts to undermine the authority by taking himself head of the league.
