The Woman with velvet collar is a novel by Alexandre Dumas published in 1850. The first chapter of this short novel is in fact autobiographical. Dumas evokes at length Charles Nodier (1780-1844), writer and close friend with whom he was welcomed in Paris at the beginning and thanks to which he was introduced into the intellectual life of the capital. At the end of this first chapter, Dumas explains that Nodier told him a story, which he relates in the rest of the novel. From the beginning the tone is given: the real and the fiction are inextricably mixed.

The hero of the novel is Hoffmann, originally a real character, E.T.A. Hoffmann (German writer and composer, 1776-1822, author of many fantastic stories), directed by Dumas. In Mannheim where he settled, Hoffmann fell madly in love with Antonia, the daughter of the conductor master Gottlieb, whom he particularly seduced thanks to his talents as a violinist. But Hoffmann caresses a dream, that of discovering Paris, a city that fascinates him. After his friend Zacharias Werner left, Hoffmann is encouraged by Antonia to satisfy this dream, but it makes him promise not to play and especially to remain faithful to it, otherwise, she would die.
