Leaving for-a moment his Scottish publisher Archibald Constable5, Scott offers the series to an English competitor, John Murray, who has a correspondent in Scotland, William Blackwood. He begins to Write The Black Dwarf. Contrary to his habit, he moves very slowly. Publishers must call him to order4. At the end of August 1816, he Submitted the first 192 pages of the manuscript to William Blackwood. It is like for Waverley a historical novel, a kind that Scott had neglected in Guy Mannering and The Antiquary. Blackwood is excited. But Scott, under pressure, finishes his job too expeditiously. When Blackwood receives the end of the story, he is not satisfied at all. He sent Scott some suggestions for revision made by William Gifford, John Murray’s Literary advisor. Outraged that Gifford was consulted, Scott refuses to change a single word.
